Post-undergraduate

Post-undergraduate students are students who already hold a bachelor’s degree but want to either obtain another undergraduate degree (second-degree students) or take additional courses not related to another degree (post-baccalaureate students).

Criteria for Second Degree Students

You are considered a second-degree student if you already have a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science or an equivalent degree and want to obtain another undergraduate degree. If you graduated with a Bachelor's degree from a foreign university, a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES-approved provider must be completed to demonstrate the equivalence of a U.S. Bachelor's degree. Please note that a first professional degree (e.g., Doctor of Medicine) is not the equivalent of a U.S. Bachelor's degree unless an evaluation explicitly states it as such. Several applicants have experienced success using SpanTran for their course-by-course evaluation, as they typically provide this equivalency statement for those who have earned professional degrees.

Each academic department determines the specific admissions criteria for second-degree students. Students holding a bachelor’s degree or higher who wish to enroll for the purpose of obtaining an Initial Michigan Provisional Teaching Certificate should apply as a second-degree seeking student.

Students pursuing a second degree will pay upper-level tuition.

Steps to Apply for Second Degree Students

  1. Complete the online application.
  2. Have your official college transcript(s) from each college or university you attended mailed to:
    Undergraduate Admissions
    East Wilson Hall, Room 2000
    371 Wilson Blvd.
    Rochester, MI 48309-4454

The transcript must bear the seal of the institution and must not be stamped "issued to student." If you have attended more than one college, transcripts from each must be provided.

Once Oakland University receives your application, we will:

  • Process your application to ensure all materials have been received.
  • Gather information needed for the academic department to make an admissions decision.
  • Forward your file to the appropriate academic department for a decision.

When a decision is made, OU will contact you via U.S. mail. If you receive a delay decision, you should contact Undergraduate Admissions at (800) OAK-UNIV or (248) 370-3360.

Criteria for Post-Baccalaureate Students

You are considered a post-baccalaureate student if you already have a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science or an equivalent degree and want to take additional undergraduate courses not related to another degree.

Under post-baccalaureate status, your previous academic work will not be evaluated by the registrar and you will be admitted as a non-degree seeking candidate.

Students taking post-baccalaureate courses will pay upper-level tuition. Under this status, you do not qualify for financial aid.

Students who already hold a bachelor's degree and wish to audit an undergraduate course should apply as a post-baccalaureate  student. Students who already hold a bachelor's degree and wish to take graduate-level courses must apply to be a non-degree seeking graduate student.
